Dentures and Partial Dentures

Quick Guide to the Type of Dentures That Are Right for You

It can be intimidating to get dentures. These are artificial teeth that can replace your permanent ones and potentially improve your oral health. It can also help you to chew better and make it easier for you to speak. Your dentist can help you pick out the right kind of dentures. Everything from the fit to the feel to the look of the dentures will matter to a patient.

Types of dentures

The patient can meet with the dentist to talk about dentures. The two main kinds are complete and partial dentures. The right kind for a patient will depend on whether they need a few teeth or all of them replaced. With complete, or full, dentures, a full arch of damaged or decayed teeth can be replaced. A lab can also customize the dentures to fit the dimensions of the wearer’s mouth.

Complete dentures might be needed if a patient has lost several teeth or has many damaged ones. Full dentures can replace both the lost tissue and the missing teeth. With partial dentures, only a few teeth will be replaced. This style of denture will be used if there are still some healthy teeth that are functional. The partial denture will be anchored to the remaining teeth.

Both complete and partial dentures are removable. That means that patients do not need to worry about bacteria, plaque, and food particles accumulating. But a fixed bridge can also be used, which is a type of partial denture. The dentist will help a patient select the right denture for the patient’s mouth.

Aesthetics of the denture

The color of the denture will also matter to the patient. This is what patients will see when the patient laughs, eats, and smiles. If the dentures are not the right color for the patient’s coloring, the teeth might detract from the looks. There are several shades of white.

Just because there is a bright white color does not mean it is the right option. Some can look unnatural. The right approach is selecting the teeth that will give the mouth a more natural look. Everything from hair to eye to skin color will play a role in the right shade of white.

The dentures are there for more than just function. By choosing the right color, a patient will not feel self-conscious about eating in public. The dentist will show the patient a shade chart with different colors on it. Patients can look at each shade in-depth to find a suitable shade. For partial dentures, the color should match the other teeth.
