Need to See a General Dentist for Invisalign Approval?

For the many people who are currently considering getting Invisalign® treatment, a general dentist can let them know if it is right for them. These treatments make it possible to straighten teeth without compromising the appearance of the smile. Unlike traditional metal braces, which come with highly visible metal brackets and wires that look like miniature railway tracks cemented on the patient's teeth, Invisalign® utilizes clear aligner trays to gradually push the patient's teeth into a better alignment.

Qualifying for Invisalign® treatment

Invisalign® can be effectively used to treat a wide range of teeth alignment issues like crooked teeth, crossbites, underbites and overbites. The cause of the poor tooth alignment is the most significant factor a general dentist will consider while evaluating a patient. Invisalign® is effective when it comes to treating poor teeth alignment caused by the patient's teeth being abnormally positioned, but it does not do much for orthodontic issues caused by poor jaw arrangement. Other alternatives like expanders and metal braces are a more effective way to address such alignment issues.

Other factors the dentist will evaluate before approving a patient for Invisalign® include:

The patient's age

While Invisalign® treatments can be used on patients of all ages, it does require a certain amount of discipline for treatments to be effective. Invisalign® clear aligners need to be worn for about 20 hours each day for expected results, and younger people might have a hard time sticking to this schedule.

Also, people who wear clear aligners need to step up their oral hygiene to prevent tooth decay. Invisalign® trays prevent saliva from coating teeth and cleaning them throughout the day as it normally does. That means food particles trapped underneath the trays get extended time to do damage to teeth. This can be combated by brushing after meals, before reinserting the aligner tray.

Tooth decay and gum disease

As was mentioned earlier, wearing Invisalign® trays leads to oral bacteria getting more time to damage teeth with the acids they produce. The dentist might opt to address existing issues like tooth decay and gum disease before proceeding with Invisalign® treatments. Gum disease can lead to teeth becoming loose or falling out, so it complicates teeth straightening treatments. The dentist will evaluate the patient during their consultation to ensure they are healthy enough to start treatment with Invisalign®.

Benefits of Invisalign®

There are several reasons why patients should consider choosing Invisalign® over other alternatives:

  • Removable trays: Invisalign® uses removable clear aligners to straighten teeth, which is more convenient than metal braces that are permanently fixed in place. The removable nature of Invisalign® allows wearers to continue to eat like they normally would. It also allows them to clean their mouths as they normally would.
  • Increased comfort: Invisalign® gradually increases the force being applied to the patient's teeth by switching out trays every two weeks.
  • Discreet nature: Invisalign® aligners are virtually invisible.
