Want to learn more about how Invisalign® works? The following article outlines what a general dentist has to say about the teeth straightening process.

Teeth straightening from a general dentist

A lot of people think that they have to visit an orthodontist to undergo teeth straightening treatment, however, that is far from the truth. There are a lot of general dentists who are trained and authorized to offer teeth straightening. Typically, traditional braces or Invisalign are offered because they are relatively simple and straightforward. When lingual braces or headgear is required, the general dentist may refer out to an orthodontist.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign® is a type of clear aligners that are used for teeth straightening purposes. Clear aligners are custom-made for each patient and they go directly over the top or bottom arch of teeth. They have become a very popular choice for teeth straightening because they are removable, clear in color and extremely flexible as far as the treatment process.

How does Invisalign® work?

Invisalign® works differently than other types of teeth straightening options. Unlike traditional or ceramic braces, Invisalign is made of a flexible plastic material that is relatively comfortable in feel. Additionally, it is one oral piece, as opposed to multiple brackets and wires.

During the Invisalign process, a general dentist will have a dental lab custom create a set of aligners for the patient. Impressions and molds will be taken of the patient's teeth to determine how the aligners will look. Additionally, a dental software will be used to predict how the teeth will shift over time. Once the Invisalign has been made, the teeth straightening process can begin.

The patient will visit the general dentist every two to three weeks to undergo adjustments. Adjustments will simply involve the dentist examining the teeth and providing the patient with the next set of aligners. Each aligner will be designed to match the patient's teeth as they shift.

Unlike other teeth straightening options, Invisalign works to shift the teeth altogether, instead of individually. Because Invisalign is one whole piece, the teeth have the ability to move as one, rather than one at a time. It has been said that Invisalign works quicker because the teeth are all moving together.
