5 Things to Know When Considering Invisalign®

Currently, one of the most popular choices in teeth straightening that dentists and orthodontists are recommending for their patients is the Invisalign® treatment. There are multiple factors that both dentists and patients love about this option. In this article, we are going to cover five things that both patients and dentists commonly talk about when explaining the perks and differences of having teeth straightened using Invisalign®, rather than more traditional methods like metal braces.

To find out if Invisalign® could be a tooth straightening option for you, talk to your dentist. Most people are, however in some more severe cases the Invisalign® treatment may not be best, but this is not typically the case for most patients. Invisalign® is an option for the majority of patients, but sometimes severe misalignment can lead to patients needing to use a different treatment, like traditional braces.

#1 – The Invisalign® aligners are custom made

Once a patient and their dentist decide that the Invisalign® treatment is a good option, the next step is getting the custom-built aligners for the patient. The dental professional will take a computer model of the teeth, gums and person’s mouth. The dentist sends the models to the lab, and the lab creates the set of aligners that the person will be wearing and changing out. The person's dentist will explain the timeline for each aligner and the importance of wearing them at least 20 hours per day.

#2 – Brushing and flossing is vital

During the Invisalign® treatment, this aspect is even more important than a persons typical daily oral hygiene routine. Brushing and flossing teeth will ensure that no particles get stuck under the aligner, and help the treatment go smoothly. Removing the aligner at least twice per day and brushing and flossing cannot be stressed enough during the Invisalign® treatment process.

#3 – Follow all the Invisalign® treatment rules

Although the dentist will go over all of the things a person needs to do, it is relatively simple compared to alternative methods. One of the most critical aspects is wearing each aligner for at least 20 hours a day.

#4 – Keep your Invisalign® aligners clean, too!

Keeping your Invisalign® aligners clean and free of any food particles is just as important as brushing. The dentist will explain which cleaning solution options that are best. However, never brush the aligners with a toothbrush because this can damage or scratch the aligners. Overall, the cleaning and maintenance of the Invisalign® aligners is straightforward and is much more user-friendly than other tooth straightening alternatives.

#5 – What happens after the Invisalign® treatment?

Just like with traditional braces, after the Invisalign® treatment, there will be a timeframe that the patient needs to wear a retainer. This helps keep the teeth in place after their successful straightening.
